Vikings Volleyball: Battle Tested – Battle Ready

by J. Logue, Vanguard staff

As the night begins to set in over Spokane, I can barely contain my excitement. While everyone walks around doing their holiday shopping, I know there is a battle that is about to take place right outside town.

Crossing paths with head coach Michael Seemann today, I could feel his intensity and it was clear he was ready to play. Speaking on last night, he noted how Montana brought an intensity that caught the Vikings off guard.

He also noted how they responded.

With a player from the Grizzlies literally sacrificing her finger in the initial stages of the match and her sub playing like she was possessed, Portland State dropped the second set and were put in a place they had yet to be in heading into the half.

Coming out of the locker room after the break the Vikings responded by matching Montana’s inspired play and showed why they deserve to be in the Championship game, something Seemann noted as a good indication of how good this team might be.

Talking to senior setter and league MVP Nique Fradella, that intensity was again resonated.

“Were excited to play. We didn’t really want one team over the other last night [in the Eastern Washington vs. Northern Colorado game] to win,” Fradella said. “Were ready to play [in the championship game] no matter what.”

And they will need to be.

Facing a Northern Colorado team that also had to handle adversity and went five sets against the home team, the Bears have the weapons across the net to not only matchup with Portland State but also to win.

So while I begin my trek to Reese stadium tonight, the Vikings will be preparing themselves for a match that will determine who is ready and who is just talking.

This time they hope to be confronted with something foreign. This time they want to be Big Sky champs.
