Vikings Volleyball: Ready and Focused

by J. Logue, Vanguard staff

With the first game of the conference tournament looming, the Vikings are keeping an even keel. Despite playing in front of what should be a mostly hostile crowd, the Portland State women's volleyball team appears to be ready for whatever the Big Sky Tournament has in store for them.

Considering the last two years, it’s hard to argue with them.

Playing in the Big Sky postseason in every year head coach Michael Seeman has been at the helm, the Vikings have enjoyed their time in the tournament.

Never finishing worse than second, and winning last year’s tournament championship, the Vikings have put up together an amazing 3 – 1 record--with their only loss coming to Sac State in the 2007 championship game.

What’s even more amazing and only adds to the significance of the numbers is the vastly different ways Seemann has gotten his teams there.

Looking at the numbers over the last two years, it doesn’t take much to notice the difference in the 2008 Vikings versus the squad from 2009.

Back in 2008, Portland State averaged 12.9 kills per set and 17.2 digs per set in what was clearly a mistake-free and defensive-minded team. In contrast, this year’s team averages 14.3 kills per set and 14.8 digs per set in what has turned into an offensive renaissance this year for them.

Despite all this, the Vikings continue to win and enjoy one of their best records in conference, going 14-2 against Big Sky competitors--proving that rather than rebuilding, Seemann simply remodels.

As Portland State heads into tonight’s matchup against the Bobcats, the Vikings look to continue their success over the last two years, taking their rightful place as one of the best teams in the land.
