Does PSU football have a new head coach?

The Portland Tribune is reporting that an announcement is expected tomorrow declaring Nigel Burton the new head coach of Portland State's football program.

Despite the Tribune's report, the Portland State Athletics Department remains tight-lipped on the decision. Director of Athletics Torre Chisholm called the report "premature" and said that, while nothing has been made official, Burton is among the top candidates to become the new leader of Vikings football.

Burton, who served as Portland State's secondary coach and special teams coordinator in the 2001 and 2002 seasons under Tim Walsh, is currently in his second year as defensive coordinator for the Nevada Wolfpack. For the five years between his time with Portland State and Nevada, Burton coached the secondary at Oregon State and was named one of the best recruiters in the Pac-10 by rivals.com.

The 1999 graduate from the University of Washington was a three-year starter at safety for the Huskies, helped the team make three straight bowl game appearances and was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic Team selection.
